What Is Roll Forming? How CG Infra Shapes Steel Coils Into Roofing Profiles

If you've ordered profile sheets, purlins, or decking sheets and wondered how a flat steel coil turns into a precisely shaped roofing profile, the answer is roll forming. It's one of three core processes CG Infra runs in-house at our Raipur facility — alongside our slitting line and cut-to-length operations — and it's the step that gives roofing sheets their actual shape and structural strength.

What Is Roll Forming?

Roll forming is a continuous cold-forming process that shapes a flat steel coil into a fixed profile by passing it through a series of paired rollers. Each pair of rollers bends the metal a little further than the last, gradually forming the final profile — corrugated, trapezoidal, or a custom shape — without cutting, heating, or otherwise weakening the material. Once the sheet reaches its final shape, an automated cut-off system trims it to the required length.

Unlike cut to length, which produces flat sheets, roll forming is what actually creates the ribbed or profiled shape you see in roofing sheets, purlins, and decking sheets. Both processes work together: a coil is often slit to the right width first, then roll-formed into its final profile.

How the Process Works, Step by Step

  1. Coil feeding — A levelled steel coil (already slit to the correct width, if needed) is fed into the roll forming line

  2. Progressive shaping — The sheet passes through a series of precision-engineered rollers, each one incrementally bending the metal closer to its final profile

  3. Cold forming — Because the process happens without heat, the steel's strength and coating integrity are preserved rather than compromised

  4. Cut-off — Once the profile is fully formed, an automated system cuts it to the exact length specified for the order

The result is a uniform, structurally consistent profile — run after run, coil after coil.

Why Roll Forming Matters for Your Project

Consistent profile accuracy Every sheet in a large order comes out with the same shape, thickness, and dimensions — critical when you're covering a large industrial roof and sheets need to align and overlap correctly.

Higher structural strength Because it's a cold-forming process, roll forming actually increases the material's strength and load-bearing capacity compared to the flat coil it started as — important for roofing that has to handle wind load, foot traffic during maintenance, and monsoon rain.

Smooth, clean finish Well-formed profiles have clean, well-defined ribs and edges, which matters both for weatherproofing (water needs to run off cleanly) and for appearance on visible roofing.

Faster turnaround on large orders Roll forming is a continuous process, so it can produce long runs of profiled sheet quickly — useful for large industrial sheds or warehouse roofs in belts like Urla, Siltara, and Bhanpuri where big spans need a lot of sheet, fast.

Design versatility The same core process produces profile sheets, purlins, decking sheets, and corrugated sheets — just with different roller tooling — which is why CG Infra can offer a consistent, matched product range across our entire product line.

Where Roll Forming Fits in Your Order

If you're ordering roofing sheets, purlins, or decking sheets from CG Infra, roll forming is happening behind the scenes to turn raw coil into the profile you actually install. Because we run this in-house at our Raipur facility, rather than outsourcing it, we can:

  • Match profile, gauge, and length to your exact project specs

  • Keep quality consistent across large or phased orders

  • Turn around large-volume requirements faster than suppliers who depend on third-party fabricators
